Traditional Oil Paint – How to make it and use it - March 1 & 2
Guest Instructor: Catherine Mills
We are excited to have guest instructor Catherine Mills, a master in portrait painting, teach this class.
This class discusses traditional mediums and theories of traditional techniques in oil painting based on evidence and current restoration (examples of current analysis of Rembrandt, Holbein or Vermeer). Students learn to refine their own oil, using chalk (calcium carbonate) to make putty medium or modify oil paint, and how to make studio oil or pre-polymerized oil. We will also discuss commercially available oil paints, additives, pigments and modern solvents.
We will discuss grounds, and preparation of surfaces for oil paint and considerations for best practices, particularly with oil paint.
Catherine will demonstrate paint mulling , preparation and tubing of your own oil paint.
Students will each work on a small still life painting, image provided, using tracing and transferring, and direct or indirect painting (students’ choice).
