Art, Culture, and Connection: Highlights from Tuscany 2024
I recently returned from hosting an unforgettable two-week art retreat at Fattoria di Fubbiano in the beautiful hills of Tuscany. This trip was a unique blend of art, culture, and connectivity, and I’m excited to share the highlights of our experience.
Our stay at Villa Teto
Nestled among vineyards and olive groves, the Fattoria di Fubbiano farm and estate provided the perfect backdrop for classes. The serene environment allowed us to immerse ourselves in creativity, making it an ideal setting for both relaxation and inspiration. Our group of six participants truly made this trip enjoyable. Together, we worked on our art, explored the local area, and savoured delicious Tuscan cuisine. Students created beautiful fresco panels and and hand painted decorative ornament in the style of "Grottesca."
Exploring the Art of Fresco
The retreat began with a week-long course led by the talented Alison Woolley, who guided us through the intricacies of fresco painting. This course was designed for those looking to either create decorative fresco panels or understand the restoration of existing works. Alison’s expertise and passion for fresco painting helped us appreciate the versatility and luminous quality of lime-based materials. We learned to harness the beauty of these traditional techniques, resulting in stunning fresco panels that we could proudly call our own.
Diving into “Grottesca”
In the second week, I had the pleasure of teaching aspects of Italian painted ornament in the style of “Grottesca.” This decorative painting style features whimsical floral designs intertwined with human and animal elements, often arranged in symmetrical patterns. We drew inspiration from historical examples found in places like Pompeii and the grand palazzos of Florence, incorporating these elements into our own artwork. It was rewarding to see participants take this ancient style and infuse it with their unique creative voices.
Daily Life in Tuscany
A typical day at the retreat began with the gentle crowing of roosters in the distance as the sun rose over the vineyards. After a refreshing swim in the pool, we gathered for breakfast outdoors, soaking in the breathtaking views. Our mornings were dedicated to art classes, followed by a leisurely lunch and painting sessions in the afternoon. Evenings were filled with catered dinners and wine under the stars, fostering lively conversations and connections among participants. Weekends offered a break from painting, allowing us to explore the rich cultural landscape of Tuscany.
Memorable Excursions
Our retreat included several excursions that added depth to our experience. One of the highlights was our visit to the historic Villa Torrigiani, known for its incredible grottos and ornate trompe-l'œil frescos. We were awed by the beauty of the villa, which even features a whimsical papier-mâché bed!
We also enjoyed a memorable hike to San Gennaro for an espresso, where we stumbled upon frescos and vibrant pomegranate trees along the way.
Building Connections
Beyond the art and excursions, what made this retreat truly special was the connections we formed. I had the pleasure of renewing old friendships while also making new ones. It was gratifying to spend quality time with participants, sharing not just our artistic pursuits but also stories and laughter. The collaborative spirit and shared passion for art created lasting bonds that I cherish.
